A Cuckoo sort of day.

Where ever I went today there was a cuckoo. 

It started off at dawn with the Eastern Koel, not long after the Channel-billed Cuckoos and then Brush Cuckoos and Little Bronze-cuckoo (Gould's).

This was not over a few minutes it went on all day long!

White-throated Needletails over Wonga Beach

White-throated Needletails are rarely seen Summer visitors down the eastern half of mainland Australia. They breed in the Himilayas and virtually live on the wing following their insect food supply which may be pushed along by a weather front as is happening today at Wonga. Probably the largest of all the swifts and certainly the fastest which you will see if you can catch up with them. Often heard before seen.

Spotted Whistling Ducks on the Daintree River

Spotted Whistling Ducks have been seen on the Daintree River with Ian "Sauce" Worcester (mobile) on his dawn river trip. The sightings of these ducks in Australia is not common especially this far south.

Crested Hawk (old name) now called Pacific Baza

Again this morning along the southern part of Marlin Drive Wonga Beach.

Identify by call "ee chew, ee chew"

Heard this morning a Pacific Baza in the southern part of Marlin Drive behind the houses from Lifu Close north.

Aural morning in Daintree

Aural mornings at Wonga Beach.

Trillions of cicadas are giving a loud daytime chorus in their efforts to attract mates and 

keep predators at bay.

Earlier the raucous calls of Channel-billed Cuckoos came from the heavens and anywhere behind the beach the haunting calls of Pied Imperial Pigeons can be heard.

Stunning early morning walk along Wonga Beach at low tide produced 

Beach Stone-curlew. Just south of Janbal Street.

Crocodiles: Be wary about crocodiles and stay away from the Daintree River mouth to the north of Pinnacle Village. Don't walk on the beach at high tide or go on the beach when it is dark.

The last few mornings at Wonga Beach there have been Channel-billed Cuckoos flying south and Rainbow Bee-eaters flying north.

Lovely Fairy-wrens

Birdwatching Season

Lovely Fairy-wrens are endemic to Cape York and are difficult to spot. They are usually heard well before they are seen with their high pitched whispy calls. For the last few mornings they have been heard in Reservoir Road, Wonga Beach. The entrance is 300 metres south of Caltex Wonga, blink and you will miss it.
